Американський телевізійний серіал «Доктор Хаус» займає особливе місце в сучасній масовій культурі. Він започаткував цілий напрям так званих культових серіалів, які примирили людей, які мають високі інтелектуальні потреби, з телевізійним «милом». Досі серіали вважалися свідомо примітивним видовищем. З середини 2000-х років і до сьогодні «House M. D.» – найпопулярніше телевізійне шоу, найбільш успішний і впливовий проект новітньої історії телебачення, зразок якісної масової культури. Ця книга – спроба зібрати під однією обкладинкою всю інформацію, так чи інакше пов’язану з «Доктором Хаусом», і з’ясувати причини успіху серіалу попри неоднозначність його головного героя – «великого і жахливого» діагноста Грегорі Хауса. Феномен Хауса розглядається в контексті історії розвитку масової культури в цілому, про яку вітчизняний читач і глядач знає дуже мало, оскільки визначення «маскульт» сприймається як щось примітивне і неварте уваги культурної людини.
